A three-year R&D contract titled “Maintaining Sustainable Oyster Production for the Louisiana Oyster Industry,” has been funded by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The project provides state-of-the-art numerical modeling, web-initiated stock database management, modern information technology, and personnel training for the sustainable management of oyster resources in Louisiana. Essential to the effort is an innovative fisheries model which estimates not only a sustainable oyster harvest but determines impacts to the oyster reef as well. Thomas Soniat is the Principal Investigator and Mahdi Abdelguerfi is Co-PI of the project. This project supports senior academic researchers, a Senior Research Software Engineer, and student Research Assistants.
